Historic inn where Shakespeare and his circle of players from the King's Men met during the early 1600s. According to a 1643 manuscript account, Shakespeare and his "roystering associates" (including Richard Burbage and Ben Jonson) carved their names into the panels of the large room of this famous inn, known from Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. The inn burned down in the Southwark fire of 1676 and was demolished in 1874.
